Combed long-staple cotton is naturally smoother, so it pills less. Short-staple or hairy/brushed fibres (lofty wools, angora, brushed blends) carry more free ends and will fuzz quicker. Animal fibres like wool or cashmere can show light pilling because of their natural scales, but behaviour changes a lot with spinning and knitting density. -
Yarn build
Loosely spun, single-ply yarns feel soft yet release fibre easily. Medium/high twist and 2–3 ply yarns hold fibre in, so they wear cleaner. For durability with wool, core-spun (a strong filament core wrapped with wool) or small nylon percentages (5–15%) stabilise the yarn without killing the hand feel. -
Fabric density & stitch choice
Compact constructions (tight jersey, Milano rib) trap fibre; open textures, big tucks, waffle and airy gauges let fibre move and snag. A 12–14 gg compact knit will usually keep its face neater than a 7 gg airy fashion knit. -
How it’s worn & washed
Hard surfaces (desk edges), rough companions (denim), seatbelts and backpacks all act like sandpaper. Machine agitation and tumble drying speed things up; inside-out washing with wool detergent slows it down.
Bottom line: a wool sweater that pills a little isn’t “bad quality” by default — it reflects choices around fibre, yarn, stitch density and day-to-day use.
